What to Pack in Your Bag: Essentials for Your Family Photo Session

My motto during family sessions is usually "less is more" because the most important thing is capturing your family as they are, in the environment we choose. However, when it comes to kids, I've found it’s helpful to be well-prepared with a bag full of essentials to keep our time together enjoyable and stress-free.

Here are some items you should consider packing depending on the age of your children, the season, or the location of your session:

1. Snacks & Water Bottles

Yes, it seems obvious, but don’t forget to pack a few snacks! I know firsthand how hunger can quickly shift moods, so having non-messy snacks on hand can be a lifesaver. Stick to options like apple slices, cheese sticks, granola bars, or pretzels—anything that won't leave marks on faces, clothes, or teeth. Just remember, once snacking starts, it can be hard to stop, so portion wisely.

2. Wipes

Perfect for quick clean-ups after snacks or or wiping away dirt after playing outside. They’re a must-have to keep everyone looking fresh while we are shooting.

3. Bug Spray

During the spring, summer, and fall months, bug spray is a must to keep everyone comfortable and focused on having fun!

4. Sunscreen

Even though I usually schedule sessions in shaded areas or later in the day, it’s always good to have sunscreen on hand—especially if anyone in your family is extra sensitive to the sun.

5. Comfortable Shoes

Comfort is key for making sessions enjoyable, especially for kids. We’ll be walking, running, and playing, so make sure everyone’s wearing comfortable shoes. And if you love the feel of the ground beneath your feet, like me, going barefoot is always an option!

6. Extra Clothes

Accidents happen, especially with little ones. Bring a backup outfit for each child to put your mind at ease. For sunset sessions, consider bringing pajamas for a quick change afterward—this helps with a smooth transition to bedtime once you get home.

7. Neutral Blanket

If you prefer not to sit or lie directly on the ground, a neutral-colored blanket provides a clean, cozy surface without distracting from the main focus—you and your family.

8. Sweat Rag

For those warmer days, a sweat rag can help keep everyone looking cool and comfortable

9. Comfort Items

Bring along comfort blankets, stuffed animals, or toys that might help your kids feel more at ease. These items can help soothe any nerves and add a personal touch to the photos. Just keep in mind they might end up in the photos!

Final Thoughts

Every family is unique, and there might be a few extra items to pack in your bag that can help make your session even more enjoyable. Consider packing hairbrushes or combs for last-minute touch-ups, extra hair ties or clips, a small first-aid kit, or any other comfort items that might make your little ones feel more at ease. If there’s something special that helps your child feel comfortable, don’t hesitate to bring it along.

Your comfort and enjoyment are my top priorities during our photo session. Being prepared with these essentials helps ensure a smooth, stress-free experience, allowing us to focus on capturing your family’s genuine connection and joy.

Thank you for trusting me to capture these special moments. I can’t wait to create beautiful memories with you!
